Hymn Book picture       HYMN TUNE FINDER       Hymn Book picture

If you can recall a hymn tune, but can't remember where to find it in the hymn books, this site can help you.
Tunes are placed in Categories which can be worked out from a very minimal knowledge of the tunes, not needing any information such as key signatures, note lengths, note names, intervals, or indeed any Music Theory at all.

Sing the tune to yourself with "lah, lah, lah ..." and write down if the pitch moves up (U), down (D) or stays the same (S) between the first 9 notes, and you will obtain an 8-letter code- word defining the tune's Category. Using this Search Engine, you can display a list of tunes belonging to that Category. So instead of a manual search through many hymn books, looking at thousands of hymns, your search is narrowed to a mere handful of tunes, often just one, easily found in a hymn book TUNE index.

SEARCH INPUT

Enter the eight characters of the Category code e.g. DDUDSDUU
(in either upper or lower case) and then click on SEARCH.

Always remember that the Name of a tune often differs from the opening words of the associated hymn.
Also, different words may be set to the same tune in different hymn books. To a lesser degree, different books can associate a tune with different Names - overall there are about 10% more Names than there are distinct tunes.
